TOP 5 THINGS TO DO IN ALEXANDROUPOLI
FIND SUGGESTED HOTELS, DAY TRIPS & ADVENTURE TIPS
1. ALEXANDROUPOLI'S LIGHTHOUSE
The 27m high circular tower had been constructed by a French company in 1880, thus still in Ottoman days, but also at a time, when the harbour was being built. Usually in one's imagination Lighthouses are seen on promontories and capes, but here it is in the middle of a straight, pretty level coastline, thus in a quite unusual location.
2. DADIA FOREST
In Dadia’s Forest you’ll have the opportunity to observe rare European birds of prey. The protected species Cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus) is the habitat’s emblem. The area is also a shelter for the eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca), and the white-tailed eagle(Haliaeetus albicilla), the rarest predator in Greece. 219 species have been recorded in the area, 40 species of reptiles and amphibians, 36 species of mammals, as well as rare plants. In 1980 the land was declared as a protected area, consisting of two strictly conserved zones of 72.9 km2 and a peripheral zone around them of 367 km2.
3. ETHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF THRACE
This is a small museum in the center of Alexandroupoli, made from the private effort of Giannakidis' family. The building itself is very interesting, neoclassical 1899 house! You will see various exhibits, traditional Thracian, and the story behind them. An hour's visit is fine! Go!
4. EVROS DELTA NATIONAL PARK
The Evros River flows through Greece after rising in Bulgaria, and for much of its length it marks the border between Greece and Turkey. For this reason it is a politically sensitive area as well as an ecologically sensitive one, and the Greek authorities do take an interest in anyone visiting the area, so don’t be at all surprised if, when wandering around with binoculars and notebooks, you are approached and asked to produce identity papers. Until the late 1990s a permit was needed to even visit parts of the area, but this no longer applies.
5.HISTORICAL MUSEUM OF ALEXANDROUPOLIS
The Historical Museum of Alexandroupolis is project of the city’s Association of Friends of Antiquity and it operates with coordinated actions since 1995. It is housed in a modern building in the city center, opposite the Town Hall. The Historical Museum of Alexandroupolis consists of four spaces that cover an area of 700 square meters and hosts the museum’s permanents and the seasonal collections.
